Soul Asylum Information
Soul Asylum is an American alternative rock band that was formed in the year 1981 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The band plays grunge, alternative rock, and country music genres. It is an outgrowth of a previous group named “Loud Fast Rules” which was formed by the drummer and lead vocalist Dave Pirner along with bassist Karl Mueller, and guitarist and backing vocalist Dan Murphy. The current band members include Ryan Smith, Winston Roye, Michael Bland, and Dave Pirner. The band name was changed to Soul Asylum in 1983.
Soul Asylum recorded three albums with Twin/Tone Records, while two more albums were recorded with A&M Records. “Grave Dancers Union,” featuring "Runaway Train" was a triple-platinum album by the band. The group also played at the inauguration of President Bill Clinton in 1993. With the recording of “Candy from a Stranger” in 1998, the band took a break. A band member named Mueller was diagnosed with cancer in the year 2004 and died a year later. Soul Asylum even organized a benefit concert for him.
