The New York Mets are a professional baseball team established in 1962. Billionaire hedge fund manager Steve Cohen paid $2.4 billion to acquire the Mets in 2020. The team's total record as of the end of the 2022 regular season is 4,652 wins and 2,988 losses (.483).
Billy Eppler was named the Mets' general manager on November 19, 2021. The Mets made free agent acquisitions of Nick Plummer, Starling Marte, Eduardo Escobar, and Mark Canha during the offseason of 2021-202. The Mets signed Max Scherzer, winner of three Cy Young Awards, to a three-year, $130 million contract on December 1. Tylor Megill, Drew Smith, Joely Rodrguez, Seth Lugo, and Edwin Daz pitched the second perfect game in team history on April 29, 2022.
The Mets retired Jerry Koosman's number 36 on August 28, 2021. The Mets officially retired Keith Hernandez's number 17 on July 9, 2022. On August 27, 2022, the team officially retired Willie Mays' number 24. Bob Murphy, the Mets' broadcaster, was honored with a microphone logo alongside Kiner on April 5, 2023. The Atlanta Braves and the New York Mets played against each other in the National League East and are bitter rivals.
With majority owner Steve Cohen at his disposal for four seasons, the 2024 New York Mets are playing their 63rd MLB season, their 16th at Citi Field. The current team record is 19–21 (.475). In January 2024, the Cincinnati Reds signed outfielder Harrison Bader to a $10.5 million, one-year contract. They also inked left-handed pitcher Sean Manaea to a $28 million, two-year deal with an opt-out clause following the 2024 season, formerly with the San Francisco Giants.
Marte will not play in a game since June 22 but will begin a Minor League rehab assignment with Single-A St. Lucie on August 7. Marte, who recently stated his intention to progress to Double-A Binghamton by the week's end, can consider this a huge victory. He can play in the Mets' nine-game homestand with any luck starting on August 13th.
