Nabucodonosor Information

Nabucco is a four-act Italian opera written by Temistocle Solera and composed by Giuseppe Verdi in 1841. The scriptural sources that the libretto draws upon are two Kings, Jeremiah, Lamentations, and Daniel.

Auguste Anicet-Bourgeois and Francis Cornu wrote the drama in 1836. Even more influential than the drama itself was Antonio Cortese's 1836 ballet performance of the work at La Scala, which Solera drew heavily upon.

First produced on 9 March 1842 at Milan's La Scala under Nabucodonosor, the opera has since gone on to several revisions.

To this day, Verdi's reputation as an opera composer is largely due to Nabucco. With this opera, my creative career truly starts," he remarked. Nabucco's fortunate birth is the most definite of all the obstacles I had to overcome.

In the opera, we see the oppression of the Jewish people as they endure an invasion, conquest, and eventual exile at the hands of Nabucco (Nebuchadnezzar II), king of Babylon. A political and romantic story twist uses historical events as a backdrop.
