The men's basketball squad representing the University of California, Berkeley, is known as the California Golden Bears. Under coach Pete Newell, the program won the national title in 1959, and before that, in 1946 and 1960, they made it to the final four. Success has continued over the years for the program. The Levi Strauss & Co. owners helped fund extensive renovations to Haas Pavilion, formerly known as Harmon Gym, where the team plays home games.

The Bears finally won the conference in Montgomery's second year as head coach, ending a 50-year drought. The squad, which included four seniors in its starting lineup, had a winning record at Haas Pavilion but struggled in their non-conference schedule, losing to top teams like Syracuse, Ohio State, and Kansas. As a result, the squad fell from its preseason national ranking of thirteenth to thirteenth place. In Martin's inaugural season as head coach, the Bears posted a record of 18-15. Ivan Rabb, a 5-star power forward from Bishop O'Dowd High School, announced his decision to join Cal on April 13, 2015.

Martin resigned after three seasons to take over as head coach at Missouri. Wyking Jones, Martin's assistant coach, was named Cal's 17th head basketball coach shortly after. Jones coached for just two years, and in each of those years, the club finished last in the Pac-12. In 2019, Mark Fox, who had previously coached at Georgia, became the 18th head basketball coach at Cal.
