Columbus Blue Jackets Information
The Columbus Blue Jackets are an ice hockey team headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. They are also known simply as the Jackets. They have been playing in the NHL since 2000 when they were added as an expansion team to the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference.
The name and emblem of the team, the Blue Jackets, are a reference to Ohio's role in the Civil War. Nationwide Arena in downtown Columbus, where the Blue Jackets play their home games, debuted in 2000. They are part of the American Hockey League's Cleveland Monsters.
The Blue Jackets didn't have a season with 30 or more wins until 2005–06. The team reached the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2009 for the first time, although the Red Wings of Detroit quickly eliminated them.
Finally, Columbus won its first playoff series in 2019 against the Tampa Bay Lightning, becoming the first team in NHL history to sweep a President's Trophy winner in the first round. This followed the club's first postseason game victory 2014 against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Like the Seattle Kraken, the Blue Jackets have never made it to the league's conference finals.
The Blue Jackets made several offseason adjustments in preparation for the 2023–24 season. Ivan Provorov was acquired from the Philadelphia Flyers on June 6, 2023, and three days later, Damon Severson was acquired from the New Jersey Devils to strengthen their defensive unit.
The Blue Jackets were eliminated from the postseason in March 2024 when the Washington Capitals defeated the Winnipeg Jets 3-0.
Club President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Don Waddell announced the trade in June 2024, saying the Columbus Blue Jackets got center Alexandre Texier and a fourth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft from the St. Louis Blues.
