Baltimore Orioles Information
The Baltimore Orioles, or simply the O's, are a major league baseball club from Baltimore, Maryland. The Orioles play in the American League East division of MLB. One of the original eight clubs in the American League, the franchise played its inaugural season as the Milwaukee Brewers in Milwaukee. It was before relocating to St. Louis the following year and changing its name to the St. Louis Browns.
Many Baltimore baseball teams, notably the Orioles, an American League founder member that relocated to New York in 1903 and is now known as the Yankees, have taken their name from Maryland's official state bird, the oriole. The "O's" and the "Birds" are two of the team's many nicknames.
In 2014, the team won its division for the first time in 17 years. It advanced to the American League Championship Series for the first time in franchise history, thanks to the efforts of manager Buck Showalter and general manager Dan Duquette. This followed a stretch of 14 straight losing seasons between 1998 and 2011. The Orioles' 115 losses in the next season were the highest in team history.
The 2021 Orioles finished 52-110, but in 2023, they went 101-61 and won the AL East for the first time since 2014.
A total of 9,029 victories and 10,013 defeats (.474) will have been recorded by the franchise between 1901 and the year 2023. As of 2023, the Orioles' overall record since coming to Baltimore in 1954 was 5,567-5,459 (.505).
