The Brooklyn Nets, an NBA basketball team, represents the borough of Brooklyn in New York City. Dark gray, white, and black are the colors of their uniform. The Nets, formerly known as the New Jersey Americans, began play in Teaneck, New Jersey, in 1967. The New York Nets were a nomadic franchise in its formative years, playing in various Long Island stadiums before settling in Manhattan in 1968.
The Brooklyn Nets were purchased outright by Alibaba Group executive vice chairman Joseph Tsai on September 18, 2019. Tsai became the NBA Governor of the Nets and its subsidiaries upon the completion of the acquisition. David Levy, formerly the president of Turner Broadcasting, has taken over as CEO of the Nets and the Barclays Center. David Levy, CEO of the Brooklyn Nets and Barclays Center for less than two months, announced his resignation on November 12. Tsai's holding business, J Tsai Sports president Oliver Weisberg, took over as acting CEO.
The Nets presently play on the YES Network, which they helped found when operating as part of the YankeeNets LLC corporation (a merging of the Nets' and the New York Yankees' business activities). After the Yankee Nets collapsed and Bruce Ratner bought the team, YES negotiated a long-term contract to continue airing Nets games.
After a 26-56 season, the Brooklyn Nets are in rebuild mode for 2024-25. Key trades included sending Mikal Bridges to the Knicks for Bojan Bogdanovic, Shake Milton, five first-round picks, and Dennis Schröder and Dorian Finney-Smith to the Lakers. Limited by back injuries, Ben Simmons played only 18 games before being traded to the Clippers. Cam Thomas led the scoring with 22.5 points per game. With no 2024 draft picks, the Nets hold the sixth-best odds for the 2025 lottery, eyeing talents like Cooper Flagg. Jordi Fernández, the new head coach, aims to shape a young roster.
