The Pittsburgh Pirates are a baseball team based in Pittsburgh originated from Pennsylvania. It plays in the National League Central division of MLB. The Pittsburgh Alleghenys were a baseball team that competed in the National League from 1969 until 1993. It began playing in 1881 as part of the American Association and later changed its name to "Pittsburgh." The Pirates have appeared in the Wild Card Game three times and won the National League East division nine times. They have also won the National League championship nine times.
The term "Bucs" (shortened from "Buccos"), derived from the word "buca" (Spanish for "pirate"), is also commonly used to refer to the Pirates. PNC Park, a 39,000-seat stadium on the North Side of Pittsburgh near the Allegheny River, has been the team's home field since 2001. Forbes Field hosted Pirates games from 1909 through 1970, while Three Rivers Stadium hosted them from 1970 until 2000. Till 2022, no other World Series game has ended with a walk-off home run.
The Pittsburgh Pirates officially inaugurated their team Hall of Fame in 2022 to recognize the "most influential ballplayers in Pittsburgh baseball history," as determined by an internal committee with the assistance of team historian Jim Trdinich.
