Athletics Information
The Oakland Athletics are one of the American professional baseball teams founded in 1901 as Philadelphia Athletics (1901-1954). The team is based in Oakland, California, and competes in MLB as a member of the American League's (AL) West Division. The Athletics play at home in Oakland Coliseum currently, whereas they have played their home games formerly at Columbia Park (1901-1908), Shibe Park (1909-1954), and Municipal Stadium (1955-1967). The Athletics were formerly known as Kansas City Athletics (1955-1967), Oakland A's (1968-1986), and eventually became Oakland Athletics in 1987.
The Athletics are famous for their nicknames, such as The White Elephants, The Green and Gold, The Elephants, The Swingin' A's, and The A's. The official uniform colors selected by the team are gold, white, and hunter green. The team was founded in Philadelphia but moved to Kansas City in 1955. Later, they moved again in 1968 to their final and current location, Oakland.
The Athletics' overall win-loss record from 1901 to 2022 was 9,210-6,654 (.488). Ray Fosse, who had passed away the previous month, was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame in November 2021. The class of 2022 was announced to include players Sal Bando, Eric Chavez, Joe Rudi, director of player development Keith Lieppman, and clubhouse manager Steve "Vuc" Vucinich. Athletes Jason Giambi, Bob Johnson, Carney Lansford, and Gene Tenace, as well as veteran public address announcer Roy Steele, were all members of the Athletics Hall of Fame class of 2023, which was set to be inducted on August 6.
The 2024 season marks 57 years in Oakland and 124 overall for the Oakland Athletics club. The current team record is 19–24 (.442). After the owners overwhelmingly authorized the transfer to Las Vegas on November 16, 2023, the Athletics will relocate their team from Oakland, making this their final season in Oakland. The squad will spend the first three seasons of its temporary Sacramento home at Sutter Health Park.
Miller was set to throw a live batting practice session at the Coliseum without a cast for the first time since he went on the injured list in July due to a fractured left pinky finger.
