The Atlanta Falcons are a professional American football team based in Atlanta, Georgia. The team was founded on June 30, 1965, and played its first season in 1966. The team competes as a member club of the league's National Football Conference (NFC) South Division in the National Football League (NFL). They joined the league as an expansion team while it was under the ownership of Rankin Smith. The current home field for the Falcons is Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The team is headquartered in Flowery Branch, Georgia.
The official mascot of the team is Freddie Falcon. New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are some of the team's rivalries. The Atlanta Falcons are nicknamed The Dirty Birds and the Grits Blitz (1977 defense).
The Falcons sent longtime starting quarterback Matt Ryan to the Indianapolis Colts in a trade on March 21, 2022. In the 2024 NFL Draft, the Falcons selected Michael Penix Jr., QB, from Washington as the 8th overall draft pick.
The Atlanta Falcons missed the NFL postseason in 2024-2025 but made noteworthy improvement under quarterback Desmond Ridder. The Falcons made a big swing this offseason by drafting Drake Maye to be their next starting quarterback. After going 7–10 last year, it was clear a change under center was coming. Maye walks into a good setup; he’s got Bijan Robinson in the backfield and weapons like Kyle Pitts and Drake London around him. On defense, they added pass rusher Chop Robinson to bring more heat off the edge. The rest of the roster stayed mostly the same. Atlanta opens the season against the Bucs, and fans are hoping this is finally the year things start to click.
