The 1998–1999 season was Dallas's most successful, winning the Presidents' Trophy, Stanley Cup, and Clarence S. Campbell Bowl. Mike Modano, the franchise's all-time leading scorer, was elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2014, following in the footsteps of Brett Hull (2009), Ed Belfour (2011), and Joe Nieuwendyk (2014). Also inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010 were Derian and Kevin Hatcher, who are brothers.
The Stars reached the playoffs by overcoming a 2-0 series deficit and defeating the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Vegas Golden Knights, in seven games.
They then eliminated the Colorado Avalanche in six games in the second round. Unfortunately, the Edmonton Oilers defeated them in six games in the conference finals.
