Lord of the Rings Information
Symphony No. 1: The Lord of the Rings is Johan de Meij's first symphony for concert band and one of numerous classical music works inspired by J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy The Lord of the Rings. A portion of the symphony's international renown came from the CD released by the military band Koninklijke Militaire Kapel. It was awarded the Sudler Composition Prize in 1989.
More than one orchestra has recorded it. In 2001, the London Symphony Orchestra performed and recorded an orchestral rendition of the song, conducted by Henk de Vlieger, to accompany the 2001 film The Fellowship of the Ring. In 2010, David Bratman, a Tolkien expert, pointed out four symphony recordings. Even though it was written in Dutch, he said it followed in the footsteps of British symphonic and concert band composers like Gustav Holst and Malcolm Arnold.
Additionally, he mentioned that, similar to another symphony based on The Lord of the Rings, Symphony No. 7, The Dreams of Gandalf, by Finnish composer Aulis Sallinen, composed in 1996, its primary objective is not to narrate the tale but to establish an atmosphere. The bands of Valparaiso University performed the symphony under De Meij's direction in honor of the piece's silver jubileee.
