The Book of Mormon is a famous musical comedy. Trey Parker, Robert Lopez, and Matt Stone wrote the music, lyrics, and book. Two Latter-day Saint missionaries are shown in this story as they travel to a small community in Uganda to share the gospel with the locals. They produced the Comedy Central series South Park in 1997, followed by the musical film South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut in 1999.
After previewing at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre from February 24 to March 24, 2011, The Book of Mormon officially opened on Broadway on March 24, 2011. Casey Nicholaw directed and choreographed the production with fellow director Parker. The production team included Scott Pask (set design), Ann Roth (costumes), Brian MacDevitt (lighting design), and Brian Ronan (sound design). Larry Hochman and Stephen Oremus, the show's music director and voice arranger, collaborated for the best performance. Originally, Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells were cast as the show's two leads.
With a nearly $700 million box office total, The Book of Mormon is one of the most successful musicals ever. As of December 22, 2022, it had been running longer than any other Broadway show. Tom Xander left the play on November 26, 2022, and Conner Peirson began performing as Elder Cunningham on November 29, 2022. Simpson and Peirson are now leading the production.
