The NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament is an elimination tournament held annually to determine the college basketball national champion from the highest level of competition in the NCAA. The competition, which is played primarily in March and features a total of 68 teams, was first held in 1939. One of the most watched sporting events in the United States annually, it is famous for surprising the odds-on favorites. 

Players in the 2021 women's tournament complained about the inferior facilities and lack of branding, prompting the NCAA to rebrand both the men's and women's tournaments as "NCAA March Madness" in 2022, using versions of the same tournament-wide logo as the men's tournament. In addition, the men's tournament Final Four was renamed the "Men's Final Four" beginning in 2022, mirroring the "Women's Final Four" name used for the Final Four tournament since 1987. 

Since UNLV was a member of the Big West in 1990 and the MW since 1999, the last time a team from a mid-major conference won the National Championship was in 1990 when UNLV defeated Duke 103-73. Both the Big West and the MW are currently regarded as power conferences.

In 2024 the final four teams were UConn, Alabama, NC State, and Purdue.
