Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo Information
Originally known as the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show, the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo is the longest-running event. Since 1896, it has occurred every year from mid-January to early February in Fort Worth, Texas.
The Stock Show is a nonprofit that has donated millions of dollars to students throughout the years in the hopes that they would become the agricultural and livestock industry's leaders of the future.
Ranchers in the area wanted to get more people interested in their cattle. The first local stock show was held in 1896 when rancher Charles McFarland met with Charles French, the advertising supervisor in charge of the Fort Worth Stockyards.
A second, two-day exhibition was held in October 1896 with the National Livestock Exchange Convention, as the first had been so well received.
To boost the local cattle sector, ranchers advertised the exhibition to meat processors in the north. Fort Worth locals pooled up $50,000 and established a corporation in 1904 to organize the fair.
