Vanessa Collier Information
Vanessa N. Collier is an American blues, soul, and funk saxophonist, songwriter, and singer from Dallas, Texas, though she grew up in Columbia, Maryland. Collier developed her interest in blues music at the age of 11 when she played her saxophone. Collier studied saxophone privately with Chris Vadala, and she learned classical, jazz, and many other styles of music. Later on, she went to earn dual degrees in Performance and Music Production & Engineering at Berklee College of Music where she graduated in 2013.
Collier shared her influences to be The Wood Brothers, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Bonnie Raitt, Norah Jones, Ray Charles, Herbie Hancock, Professor Longhair, Snooks Eaglin, Aretha Franklin, and a few more. She is a Selmer endorsed woodwind artist who has worked with Bill Cooley, Patrice Rushen, Kathy Mattea, and many more visiting artists during her time in Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Heart Soul & Saxophone was the debut album by Collier that was released in 2014. The album was named "Best of 2014 Blues Breakers." She reached the semi-finals of the 2016 International Blues Challenge in Memphis due to this album. Her second album was Meeting My Shadow, on Ruf Records in 2017. The collection includes cover versions of U2's "When Love Comes to Town," Deadric Malone's "You're Gonna Make Me Cry," and "Up Above My Head, I Hear Music in the Air."
Some of her other notable studio albums include Blues Caravan 2017 and Honey Up 2018. Collier was nominated many times, including nominations for a Blues Music Award 2017, 2018, and 2019.
