Sir George Ivan Morrison (August 31, 1945) is a Northern Irish musician, singer, and songwriter. He is professionally known by his stage name, Van Morrison. Morrison first took the stage as a teenager in the late '50s, playing guitar, harmonica, keyboards, and saxophone for various Irish showbands that performed covers of the top singles of the day.
Morrison, affectionately dubbed "Van the Man" by his followers, first gained widespread attention in the 60s as the vocalist of the Northern Irish R&B band Them, with whom he co-wrote and recorded the song "Gloria," which subsequently became a standard among garage bands everywhere.
Van Morrison has worked closely with many musicians at various points in his career. John Lee Hooker, Ray Charles, George Benson, Eric Clapton, Bobby Womack, BB King, The Chieftains, Gregory Porter, Michael Bublé, Joss Stone, Natalie Cole, and Mark Knopfler are just a few of the soul and blues greats he has collaborated with.
The song "Down to Joy" from the film "Belfast," written and performed by Morrison, was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song at the 94th Academy Awards in 2022. What's It Gonna Take? was released the next year. Examined similar territory but to less critical and commercial effect. He returned to his musical beginnings with his 2023 album Moving on Skiffle.
