Herb Alpert Information
Herb Alpert (March 31, 1935) is one of the top famous American trumpeters. Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass (occasionally referred to as "Herb Alpert and the TJB") was an American trumpet ensemble that he led during the 1960s. He also established A&M Records alongside Jerry Moss in the same decade. Five of Alpert's albums have peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 list, and he has 14 platinum and 15 gold discs for his efforts.
Across 72 million copies of Alpert's albums have been sold worldwide. Aside from the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, his other honors include a Tony Award and eight Grammy Awards. He entered the Hall of Fame himself in 2006. In 2013, President Obama presented Alpert with the National Medal of Arts.
Alpert's breakthrough hit was initially titled "Twinkle Star" and was written by Sol Lake. After Alpert's initial attempts at recording the song were met with dissatisfaction, he took a break to attend a bullfight in Tijuana, Mexico.
Due to the overwhelming success of Whipped Cream & Other Delights, Alpert had to transform the Tijuana Brass from a studio band into a traveling ensemble in 1966. This album had previously outsold those by The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, and The Rolling Stones.
Alpert's 2013 album Steppin' Out was named Best Pop Instrumental Album at the Grammy Awards. Abstract expressionist painter and sculptor Alpert has shown his work in group and solo shows around the US and Europe. The 2010 sculpture show "Herb Alpert: Black Totems" in Beverly Hills garnered media attention to his visual work.
