Luther Roderick Campbell (December 22, 1960) is an American rapper, actor, record executive, and promoter. He is professionally known by his stage name, Uncle Luke. He was born in Miami, Florida. In 1979, he graduated from high school.
Luke worked as a cook at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach. He is also known as a concert promoter in Miami as he brought all the hot rap groups of the early 1980s to Miami. Luke enrolled in an eight-week study course at public radio station WDNA in 1983 to learn production techniques and basic audio editing.
Uncle Luke noticed a single from California entitled “Revelation” by 2 Live Crew. The single featured two rappers and a DJ. It was a smash hit on the South Florida club circuit, so Luke brought them to Miami to perform from California. He also started taking much interest in the group and soon managed them.
Uncle Luke released his first solo album entitled, I Got Shit on My Mind, in 1992. The album reached number 52 on the Billboard 200 chart and 20 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album spawned the hit single entitled “I Wanna Rock.” The single became a signature song for Uncle Luke.
