The Army Black Knights football team belongs to the United States Military Academy in college football. The Black Knights compete in the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), Division I. Michie Stadium in West Point, New York, where they play most of their home games. About 38,000 people can fit within this stadium. Jeff Monken is in his sixth season with the Black Knights and is the team's current head coach.
Black Knights have won the national championship thrice between 1944 and 1946. The Black Knights were not affiliated with any conference throughout the six seasons (1998-2004). Among the six FBS schools with football programs but no league affiliation, Army is now one of five remaining independents (New Mexico State, Notre Dame, BYU, Liberty, and UMass).
Using eligible data from the 2014-2017 seasons, the NCAA's football oversight committee decided the number of primary bowl tie-ins each FBS conference and FBS independent will have during the 2020-2025 bowl cycle.
The West Point Athletic Department announced on October 24, 2019, that they had signed a six-year contract that will send their team to the Independence Bowl three times and to an ESPN Events-owned bowl the other three times.
