The Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) oversees the national men's team, which competes in international tournaments. In 1926, they became a part of FIFA, and in 1927, they joined CONMEBOL. Throughout history, Ecuador has had a poor reputation as a footballing power in South America. Despite their history of setbacks, Ecuador has emerged as a formidable South American rival in recent years.
Juan Alfredo Wright, a recent college graduate from Ecuador, brought football to the country after living and playing in the United Kingdom. On April 23, 1899, he and his brother Roberto established Guayaquil Sport Club as the first Ecuadorian football team. More and more squads sprouted up nationwide as interest in the sport increased. Federación Deportiva Nacional del Ecuador was established on May 30th, 1925.
FIFA invited a national men's team to compete in the first World Cup 1930. The Minister of Social Security and Sports turned down the offer at the time because they were unhappy with the proposed budget. In 1938, Ecuador planned to compete in the I Bolivarian Games football event. They played their first game on August 8, 1938, and tied 1–1 with Bolivia. The next game the national team played, they won 2-1 over Colombia.
