BNP Paribas Open is an American annual tennis tournament. It is the most popular tennis event in the world outside of the four majors and is often referred to as the "fifth Grand Slam" because of the level of competition. The tournament is held in the Indian Wells Tennis Garden (completed in 2000), which features 29 courts and is the second-largest tennis arena in the world with 16,100 seats.
The tournament was not part of the Grand Prix Tennis Tour until 1977, and then it became a regular stop until 1989. Besides the Grand Slam tournaments, this is one of only two circuit events (together with the Miami Open) where the main draw lasts longer than eight days. The men's main draw typically begins on Thursday, and the women's main draw begins on Wednesday. Sunday of the next week is set aside for both championship games.
One of the biggest tournaments on the men's and women's tours is the BNP Paribas Open. In 2004, the tournament's field size increased to 96 players and lasted several weeks. The Sunshine Double refers to consecutive victories at the BNP Paribas and Miami Open. It has been dubbed the "Grand Slam of the West," and 2015 attracted over 450,000 spectators, more than any other tennis tournament globally. The Indian Wells Tennis Garden and the tournament were purchased by Larry Ellison in 2009.
