St. John's University's men's basketball team for New York City is the St. John's Red Storm men's basketball. In the Big East Conference, St. John's is one of the most storied basketball schools, having won countless NCAA Tournament appearances—they even made it to the Final Four in 1985. The team plays its home games at two iconic venues: The new home of Red Storm basketball is Madison Square Garden, known as the Mecca of Basketball, and Carnesecca Arena on the University Queens campus, named after legendary coach Lou Carnesecca.

St. John's played under head coach Mike Anderson, who oversaw a team that preached Mike Anderson's signature style of basketball: 40 Minutes of Hell. The team's approach was based on high–pressure defense and fast transitions, trying to outrun opponents. Although the Red Storm had potential and won a number of crucial games, they struggled to turn the corner regarding consistency, and it cost them in the postseason.
