Tune-yards Information
Tune-Yards is an Oakland, California–based music project created by Nate Brenner and Merrill Garbus. Garbus' music incorporates loop pedals, ukulele, vocals, and lo-fi percussion from a wide range of sources. The Village Voice's annual Pazz and Jop critics poll rated Tune-Yards' 2011 album Whokill as the best album of the year.
The album Nikki Nack was released in 2014. Its first track, "Water Fountain," was picked up by Google Pixel for an ad campaign in 2016. In January 2018, she released the album I Can Feel You Creep Into My Private Life. The Tune-Yards also contributed ambient music to the sci-fi film Sorry to Bother You at the same time.
Garbus self-released the first Tune-Yards album, Bird-Brains (stylized as BiRd-BrAiNs), on recycled cassette tape. Only a portable voice recorder was used to record it. Tune-Yards inked a deal with 4AD in July 2009, and Bird-Brains was published in a limited edition printing on August 17, 2009.
On April 19, 2011, a second album, Whokill (stylized as w h o k I l l), was released. "Bizness," a single from the album, was released in February 2011. It was recorded at New, Improved Studios in Oakland, California, with Garbus producing and Eli Crews engineering. During the second half of 2013, Garbus began recording songs for her third album, which she dubbed Sink-o. With the title Nikki Nack, a May 6, 2014 release date was later confirmed. I Can Feel You Creep Into My Private Life, the band's fourth album, was released on January 19, 2018.
