Tortoise Information
Tortoise is an American post-rock band. The current lineup of the group consists of John McEntire, John Herndon, Jeff Parker, Doug McCombs, and Dan Bitney. Standards, released in 2001, marked a departure for Tortoise in terms of the degree to which electronic elements and post-production were interwoven into the band's music. The band organized the 2001 All Tomorrow's Parties festival in the United Kingdom. In 2004, they came back to organize another convention day.
2004 saw the release of It's All Around You. In 2006, Tortoise released A Lazarus Taxon. This box set featured a collaboration album with Bonnie 'Prince' Billy titled The Brave and the Bold and many other bonuses. The band recorded "Didjeridoo" in 2001 for the compilation CD Red Hot + Indigo, an homage to Duke Ellington that raised money for several AIDS-related charities.
The Bright Eyes album Cassadaga features guest appearances by Bitney and McEntire. Paul Duncan, multi-instrumentalist for Warm Ghost, has collaborated with the band. On June 23, 2009, Tortoise dropped their penultimate album, Beacons of Ancestorship. During September and October of 2009, the band toured the Midwest of the United States.
