The Tams Information
The Tams are an American vocal group that was founded in 1960 and originated from Atlanta, Georgia. The band’s current lineup consists of two groups; one under R. L. Smith, by the name “The Original Tams with R. L. Smith,” featuring its original members. The other group performs and records under the leadership of Charles Pope, who is the brother of Joe Pope, co-founder of the band. The music of the Tams is defined as soul, beach music, and R&B. The name of the group comes from the Tam o’shanter hats that the members wore on stage.
The Tams released their first hit single on Arlen Records in 1962, entitled “Untie Me.” It was a Joe South composition that turned out to be Top 20 on the Billboard R&B chart. The single was followed by largely failed releases until 1964 when a hit single entitled “What Kind of Fool (Do You Think I Am)” reached the top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Some of the other hit singles by the Tams are “Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy,” “Hey Girl Don’t Bother Me,” “I’ve Been Hurt,” “Trouble Maker,” “There Ain’t Nothing Like Shaggin,” and “My Baby Sure Can Shag.” The Tams were featured performers with Jimmy Buffett on his CD named Beach House on the Moon.
