The Smithereens Information
The Smithereens are an American rock band that was formed in 1980 and originated in Carteret, New Jersey. The current lineup of the band is Jim Babjak - lead guitar, backing vocals, Mike Mesaros - bass guitar, backing vocals, and Dennis Diken - drums, percussion, backing vocals. Their music is defined as alternative rock, power pop, college rock, and hard rock. The Smithereens got its name from a cartoon character Yosemite Sam and have since become famous for writing and playing catchy 1960s-influenced power pop discography.
The Smithereens gained publicity when their song "Blood and Roses" was included on the soundtrack for Dangerously Close. The track was also featured on the 1980s TV show Miami Vice during the episode 'The Savage.' The band members shared their influences to be The Clash, Elvis Costello, The Who, and Nick Lowe. Some of the early singles by the group are "Behind the Wall of Sleep," "In a Lonely Place," "Strangers When We Meet," "Only a Memory," "House We Used to Live In," and "Drown in My Own Tears."
Some of the notable studio albums by the group are Especially for You, 1986; A Date with The Smithereens, 1994; God Save The Smithereens, 1999; Meet The Smithereens!, 2007; B-Sides The Beatles, 2008; The Smithereens Play The Beatles Washington, D.C. February 11, and 1964 Concert, 2014. The group also released two EPs entitled Girls About Town in 1980 and Beauty and Sadness in 1983. Many of their discographies and appearances include "Dangerously Close," "Blood and Roses," "Some Other Guy," "I Was a Teenage Zombie," "Time and Time Again," and "Fast Track to Nowhere: Songs from the Showtime Original Series Rebel Highway."
