The Pietasters Information
The Pietasters is an American eight-piece ska-soul band. The current lineup of the group consists of Dan Schneider (keyboards), Dave Vermillion (bass), Carlos Linares (trumpet), Jeremy Roberts (trombone), Alan Makranczy (saxophone), Rob Steward (drums), Joe Ross (guitar), and Stephen Jackson (vocals). Stephen Jackson and Chris Watt met at Virginia Tech in 1990 through mutual acquaintance Tal Bayer, who was attending neighboring Radford University and established the Slugs with Tom Goodin, a former classmate, and Ben Gauslin, an architecture student. For a few months, they went by the name Dancecrashers until settling on the Pietasters.
The newly formed band persuaded a local college booking agency to hire the English band Bad Manners to perform at Virginia Tech's auditorium, with them as the opening act. Following shows in the living room of Jackson and Watt's rental property, this was their first public performance. Later, the two bands toured the United States and Europe together.
The Pietasters embarked on their first national tour on a used school bus they had purchased for $900 in the summer of 1993. Almost all of the original members had left the band before the end of the tour, leaving only trumpeter Carlos Linares and lead singer Steve Jackson as original members.
