The Chi-Lites Information
The Chi-Lites is an American soul/R&B vocal quartet. The current lineup of the group consists of Fred Simon, Tara Thompson, and Marshall Thompson. Most members attended Hyde Park Academy High School in Chicago in 1959 (Record went to Englewood High School, and Thompson transferred to DuSable High School in his final year to study music under Walter Dyett), and that's where the group started. They participated in their high school's "Senior Varieties" talent event. Johnson also contributed to the group's subsequent single, "You've Got a Great Love," released shortly after.
The Chi-Lites' "Are You My Woman? (Tell Me So)" was a top 40 hit in the United States in 1970; Beyonce sampled it in her 2003 single "Crazy in Love," while Jay-Z sampled "That's How Long" from their 1974 album Black Album. For a PBS Soul Music show in March of 2004, the band reunited with former lead singer Eugene Record. Record lost her battle with cancer in July of 2005.
With the inclusion of Frank Reed and Marshall Thompson's wife Tara Thompson as the group's first female member, the Chi-Lites have been active for the past two decades, recording and performing alongside other soul groups like the Stylistics and Ray, Goodman & Brown. The single "Mother Love" was released in 2005. After Lester's passing in January of 2010, Thompson was the lone original member still active. A former member of the Lost Generation, Fred Simon, has taken over for Lester. Reed passed away from sickness in February 2014.
