The Boxmasters Information
The Boxmasters is an American rock band. The current lineup of the group consists of Raymond Hardy, Krik McKim, Billy Bob Thornton, and J.D. Andrew. In 2007, the band's members got together in Bellflower, California. The band's early live performances occurred in and around California and Tecate, Mexico. On June 10, 2008, Vanguard Records issued the band's self-titled debut album, The Boxmasters.
Allmusic gave it a largely negative review, saying things like, "The Boxmasters might work live because there will be visuals, but purely as a listening exercise, it's best done in small doses so the novelty doesn't wear off." Thornton "can't drum to save his life," the assessment continued, "and he can't sing." The album was commended by the Washington Post, which said that if fans love the music even half as much as the band did when recording, they will have gotten their money's worth.
Bradley Davis joined the band in July 2008 on mandolin, guitar, and vocals; Teddy Andreadis joined in August 2008 on harmonica and organ; and Mike Bruce joined in September 2008 on drums. When they played at the House of Blues in Los Angeles on September 7, 2008, it marked the end of their extensive nationwide tour. On November 11, 2008, the band's second album, Christmas Cheer, was released through Vanguard Records. Another negative review came from Allmusic, who said the music was "an acquired taste."
