TEKE TEKE Information
Canadian psychedelic rockers TEKE::TEKE combine Japanese rock and surf rock elements in their sound. Their breakthrough album, Shirushi, was a 2021 Polaris Music Prize longlist contender. When guitarist Serge Nakauchi Pelletier, trombonist Étienne Lebel, and drummer Ian Lettre heard Takeshi Terauchi's songs while on tour with rapper Boogat, they decided to form a band in his honor.
Live performances began in 2017 at Montreal's Distorsion Festival with guitarist Hidetaka Yoneyama, bassist Mishka Stein, and flutist Yuki Isami. By the time of their second performance at the Pop Montreal festival, they had added vocalist Maya Kuroki. They had transitioned from playing strictly Terauchi covers to playing original material inspired by Japanese eleki music. After releasing their debut EP, Jikaku, in 2018, and their full-length debut album, Shirushi, in May 2021, both on Kill Rock Stars, this band has been relentlessly productive since their inception.
