Sweet Honey in the Rock Information
Sweet Honey in the Rock is an African-American a cappella ensemble. The group's current lineup consists of Nitanju Bolade Casel, Aisha Kahlil, Louise Robinson, and Carol Lynn Maillard. Bernice Johnson Reagon, while instructing a singing class for the Washington, D.C. Black Repertory Company, came up with the idea for Sweet Honey in the Rock and officially established it in 1973. In 2004, Reagon left the team to pursue other interests. Named after a song that was in turn inspired by Psalm 81:16, which describes a nation so prosperous that "when rocks were cleft open, honey gushed from them," this verse served as the inspiration for the band's moniker.
The children's album Still the Same Me by Sweet Honey in the Rock, nominated for a Grammy, won Silver from the National Association of Parenting Publications. They covered Lead Belly's "Grey Goose" for the Grammy-winning Best Traditional Folk Album compilation Folkways: A Vision Shared.
The band's musical career dates back to the mid-1970s. Their music has always blended modern rhythms and storylines with a musical style steeped in the African-American Church's Gospel music, spirituals, and hymns, even though the group's members have come and gone throughout the years. All or nearly all of the group's music is an original composition.
