Swans are an American experimental rock band that was formed by singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Michael Gira in 1982. The band originated from New York City and deals in post-rock, noise rock, experimental rock, and industrial genre. The music by Swans was famous for its sonic brutality and misanthropic lyrics. The current lineup of the band includes Michael Gira (guitar, vocals), Christoph Hahn (guitar, lap steel guitar), Thor Harris (drums, percussion, vibraphone, hammered dulcimer, keyboards), Christopher Pravdica (bass guitar), Phil Puleo (drums, percussion, dulcimer), Paul Wallfisch (keyboards), Norman Westberg (guitar, vocals), Larry Mullins (drums, Mellotron, percussion, vibes, vocals), and Yoyo Röhm (bass guitar, double bass, keyboards, vocals).
Swans was a debut EP by the band which was released on Labor. It was followed by the first full-length release, Filth (1983). Cop (1984) and the originally untitled Young God EP were together released in 1984 and were later re-released on CD in 1992. Some of the other notable discographies by Swans include Greed (1986), Holy Money (1986), Children of God (1987), The Burning World (1989), White Light from the Mouth of Infinity (1991), Love of Life (1992), The Great Annihilator (1995), Soundtracks for the Blind (1996), My Father Will Guide Me up a Rope to the Sky (2010), The Seer (2012), Leaving Meaning (2019), and a few more.
Playing at painfully loud volumes during concerts was one of the trademarks of Swans' early period. The band also saw a desolvation period but soon was re-formed in January 2010. The band went on a series of U.S. and European tour dates. They also headlined the Supersonic Festival in Birmingham, England.
