Sumac Information
Sumac is an American-Canadian post-metal supergroup. The current lineup of the band consists of Brian Cook (bass), Nick Yacyshyn (drums), and Aaron Turner (vocals and guitars). Aaron Turner, the band's lead guitarist, set out to make the strongest music of his career when he began working on new material that would become Sumac. After writing the basic framework for a few songs, he approached Kurt Ballou of Converge to see if he could recommend a drummer that would mesh well with his composed music.
Ballou suggested Baptists' drummer Nick Yacyshyn when he and the Canadian crust-punk band recorded their sophomore album Bloodmines in April 2014. Together, Turner and Yacyshyn created music that Yacyshyn described as "a fairly dense, hefty experience and kind of out there, I'd say." Until now, I've never been a part of a band with a sound like this. Although both members were already involved in other projects, Turner declared that Sumac would try to become a full-time band that would keep writing, recording, and touring.
Sumac's first live gig was in December 2014 in Vancouver, British Columbia, opening for Deafheaven. At the time, the band had only played together twice. Sumac's signing to Thrill Jockey for the release of their second studio album was announced in February 2016, one year after the band's debut album was published.
