John Lyon (December 4, 1948) is an American singer and songwriter who is better known by his stage name Southside Johnny. Typically, he fronts the band Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. He was born in Neptune, New Jersey, and grew up in Ocean Grove, New Jersey. Johnny grew up in a home full of music, and he graduated from Neptune High School with Vini Lopez and Garry Tallent. He achieved prominence in the mid-1970s when Johnny appeared as the second act to emerge from the Jersey Shore music scene.
Southside Johnny released his first three albums in the 1970s. The albums were the Stax-influenced R&B type and entitled; I Don’t Want to Go Home (1976), This Time It’s For Real (1977), and Hearts of Stone (1978). The song “I Don’t Want To Go Home” was written by Steven Van Zandt, which became one of the signature songs of all time. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were featured in the movie “Between the Lines” as a bar band. The band has also appeared on SCTV, the Canadian sketch comedy television show.
Southside Johnny has worked with a few record labels since he entered the music industry, including Epic Records, Mercury Records, Mirage Records, and Leroy Records. He has released several notable albums with his band, such as The Jukes (1979), Havin’ a Party With Southside Johnny (1979), Love Is a Sacrifice (1980), and many more.
