SOS Band Information
The S.O.S Band is an electro-funk and R&B group. The current lineup consists of Mary Davis and Abdul Ra'oof. In 1977, members Jason Bryant (keyboards/vocals), Billy Ellis (saxophone), Willie "Sonny" Killebrew (saxophone), Bruno Speight (guitar), John Alexander Simpson (bass), James Earl Jones III (drums), and Mary Davis (lead vocals) formed a band called Sounds of Santa Monica. He played at the Regal Room in Atlanta, Georgia.
Bunny Jackson-Ransom, the band's manager, presented a demo to Clarence Avant, the CEO of Tabu Records. Avant recommended that after Tabu signed the band, they collaborate with Sigidi Abdullah, a songwriter, and producer. Abdullah wondered why an Atlanta band chose to call themselves Santa Monica. The band's keyboardist, Jason Bryant, said the Santa Monica, California, the show was great fun. The S.O.S. Band was Abdullah's next idea, an acronym for "Sounds of Success."
In the spring of 1980, Abdullah produced and co-wrote the platinum-selling single "Take Your Time (Do It Right)" with Harold Clayton, who spent five weeks at the top of the R&B chart and peaked at number three on Billboard's pop chart. S.O.S., their self-titled debut album, sold over 800,000 copies and spent three weeks in the top two of the R&B album charts. Abdul Ra'oof, a trumpeter, singer, and percussionist, joined the band on their global tour.
