Shawn James (September 23, 1986) is an American singer, musician, and songwriter. He was born in Chicago, Illinois. He was raised in a Pentecostal church and sang in the choir there. He also participated in opera, orchestra, and singing lessons in high school. James began his career as a sound engineer in Nashville, Tennessee, at recording studios. He relocated to Fayetteville, Arkansas, in 2012 to pursue his musical career.
James' biggest break came in December 2016, when Ellie, a character in the reveal trailer for the 2020 video game The Last of Us Part II, sang his 2012 song "Through the Valley." Eventually, the song gained over 60 million streams across Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube, making it the UK's most popular viral hit. He re-recorded the song and published it on June 5, 2020, in anticipation of the game's release two weeks later.
James' music has also been used in the reality series Yukon Men on Discovery Channel, the courtroom drama Reckless on CBS, and the comedy-drama Shameless on Showtime. He signed a record deal with Parts + Labor Records and has a publishing agreement with Raleigh Music Group.
