Jefferson Hart and his daughters form a rock band that puts sentimental anecdotes and family humor into songs. Secret Monkey Weekend is a rock band comprised of Jefferson Hart and his adopted stepdaughters, Ella, 19, and Lila, 14.
The opening song, "Honey Num," was originally a meaningless phrase that Lila, the drummer/singer, sang when she was six. Ella, a bassist, wrote a song called "Fascist Blood Baby" last year about a villain from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, one of her favorite series. The origins of Secret Monkey Weekend may be traced back decades to when the girls' mother, Laura Hart (now an archivist at UNC's Wilson Library), was known as Laura Brown. She wed local musician and fan favorite Matt Brown.
Brown was a drummer for several different bands and duos, including the country band John Howie Jr. & the Rosewood Bluff and the duo Matt Brown and his Drums of Renown, which included Jefferson. Since Jefferson first met Laura and the Brown girls when they started coming to his shows, they became good friends. Laura explains that Ella met Jeff because "they went to every game together."
