Salt-N-Pepa is an American hip-hop band. The current lineup consists of Salt (Cheryl James), Pepa (Sandra Denton), and DJ Spinderella (Deidra Roper). The band was formed in 1985 in New York City. Salt N Pepa was signed to Next Plateau Records, and through that label, they released a single in 1987 entitled “Push It.” The single hit number 1 in three countries and became a top 10 or top 20 in many other countries. The band’s debut album, Hot, Cool & Vicious, sold more than a million copies in the United States. It made them the first female rap act that achieved platinum and gold status.
Salt-N-Pepa released another album entitled, Very Necessary, selling more than 7 million copies worldwide and became the highest-selling album by a female rap act at the time. The band sold over 15 million records worldwide, making them one of the bestselling rap acts of all time. Salt-N-Pepa has been nominated for Grammy Awards many times in their career. In 1995, the group won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for their song entitled “None Of Your Business.” They also became the first female rap acts to receive a Grammy Award, along with Queen Latifah, who also won the same year.
