Russell Thompkins Jr. Information
Russell Thompkins Jr. (March 21, 1951) is an American soul singer. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Thompkins participated in a singing group named the Monarchs at Benjamin Franklin High School, where they won a talent show against another group called the Percussions. Shortly after that, both factions broke apart. In 1968, the surviving members of these groups came together to establish a new group called The Stylistics: Thompkins, James Smith, and Airrion Love from The Monarchs, and James Dunn and Herbie Murrell from the Percussions.
"You're a Big Girl Now," by the Stylistics, was released in 1970 and became a regional hit for Sebring Records. Avco Records, a much larger label, quickly signed the Stylistics, and their debut single quickly rose to the top seven on the R&B charts at the start of 1971. To collaborate with them, Avco contacted record producer Thom Bell. Bell was dissatisfied with the Stylistics during their audition, but he decided to produce them because he saw potential in Thompkins's powerful high tenor voice.
Covers of "Embraceable You" by George and Ira Gershwin and "Jealousy" by Thom Bell and Linda Creed, originally recorded by Dionne Warwick, may be found on his 2002 solo album titled A Matter of Style. They have a DVD out called Old School Soul Party Live! that was included in the PBS My Music series and are still performing live. With James Ranton's departure for health concerns, the band is now a trio.
