Rufus McGarrigle Wainwright is an American-Canadian songwriter, singer, and composer. He had released numerous tracks and seven albums of original music. His parents are musicians as well, and his younger brother is a singer. Wainwright studied piano at McGill University in Montreal, and from the age of six, he started to play the piano. He started touring with a folk group, "The McGarrigle Sisters and Family," at the age of 13.
Rufus McGarrigle Wainwright initiated his official career at the age of 14 by a song called “I'm a-Runnin” performed in Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveller film. This song got nominated as Best Original Song in 1989 Genie Awards.
He released his first self-titled debut album in May 1998. The WainWright’s other notable albums are Poses (2001), Want One (2003), Want Two (2004), All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu (2010), Release The Stars (2007), Out of the Game (2012), and Take All My Loves: 9 Shakespeare Sonnets (2016). Rufus Does Judy at Carnegie Hall is his first live album released in 2007 by Wainwright. He released his second live album Milwaukee at Last!!! In 2009.
He appeared in a Gap commercial in December 1998. In the same year, Wainwright toured with Sean Lennon. He also toured with Guster, Ben Folds, Tori Amos, and Sting from 2001-2004. On March 15, 2005, he released his first EP entitled Alright, Already: Live in MontréaL. He started writing his first opera, Prima Donna, in 2017 that won a Dora Mavor Moore Award in June 2011 for Outstanding New Musical/Opera.
Some of the films in which he appeared are The Aviator, Heights, and Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveller. He released a comedy video on the Funny or Die in June 2012. That same year, he wrote and sang Metaphorical Blanket" in Any Day Now movie.
Gay & Lesbian American Music Awards nominated Wainwright for four awards, including album of the year, video of the year, pop recording of the year, and it won for the Best New Artist. He was also nominated as Most Promising Male Vocalist of the Year (1990) Juno Award. His second album, Poses, ranked No.1 on the Top Heatseekers chart and nominated as Outstanding Music Album in GLAAD Media Awards.
