Placebo Information
Placebo is a British alternative rock band. The current lineup consists of Stefan Olsdal and Brian Molko. They formed in London in 1994 with Brian Molko on vocals and guitar and Stefan Olsdal on bass and guitar. Robert Schultzberg, who joined the band as their drummer in late 1994, departed in 1996, not long after the release of their self-titled debut album, due to creative differences with Molko, and was replaced by Steve Hewitt the following year. Molko is of Belgian ancestry, while Olsdal and Schultzberg are native Swedes. Molko and Olsdal spent their formative years in Luxembourg before going to London, eventually becoming British residents.
Placebo first came to prominence in the United Kingdom in 1997 with the release of the single "Nancy Boy," which was widely criticized for its gender-bending lyrics. This followed the release of a recording, a split single, and the band's self-titled debut album. The band's androgynous look and musical content, as well as Molko's distinctive high-registered voice and lyrics that freely discussed sexuality, mental health, and drug use, set them apart from their contemporaries in the Britpop scene.
In 2007, Hewitt parted ways with Placebo over artistic disagreements. The following year, Steve Forrest took his position. Forrest recorded two records with Placebo before leaving in 2015 to focus on his solo career. Placebo has been a pair since 2015, albeit with occasional guest musicians.
