Peter Rivera grew up in Motor City. His mother stayed at home while his father worked in a factory. When he was nine years old, a music store salesman visited his home and convinced his parents to buy a 30-lesson drum set instruction package. Peter performed on stage with spoons and a record his father had given him when he was five years old, but other than that; he had a fairly typical upbringing.
Since his family could not afford more courses, he was forced to give up after only three. Peter spent a good portion of his childhood learning the intricacies of drumming to the sounds of a record player and a worn-out snare drum he received for Christmas. Peter had two paper routes and used the money he saved to buy a set of gold glitter drums. The first step in a long and fruitful career as a drummer.
His first band, The Sultans, was founded after he met a handful of guitarists. The group rehearsed for a few years before Peter was discovered by the Sunliners, members of a prominent band, during a church event. The Sunliners wanted Peter to try out for the band, but they ultimately decided not to hire him. But a year later, they ran into him again, and this time they wouldn't let him get away. The Sunliners played in a seedy bar five nights a week after months of practice and auditioning for the gig. For them, it was a necessary first step.
