Omnipotent Youth Society Information
Omnipotent Youth Society is a Chinese alternative rock band founded in 1996 in Shijiazhuang, Hebei, a northern Chinese industrial city. Four musicians comprise the band: violinist and lead vocalist Dong Yaqian (Er Qian), guitarist Ji Geng, drummer Fengjiang, and trumpet player Shi Li. Most of their songs feature melodies composed by Dong Yaqian and lyrics penned by Ji Geng.
The group's second studio album, 2020's Inside the Cable Temple, came out in December. Douban again ranked this album as the best of 2020, much like their debut. They were headliners at that year's Genki Forest Music Festival in Chengdu. After a decade since the first album's release, this follow-up keeps up the high creative standard and sells 700,000 copies—the most ever for a digital album by an independent artist in China.
The paper linked the band and their latest album to the renewed interest in Dongbei culture. In 2021, Shijiazhuang bestowed a grant upon Ji Geng for his contributions to Shijiazhuang culture. At the 12th Midi Awards in 2023, they were named Best Rock Band of the Year.
