Nerf Herder is an American rock band that was founded in 1994 from Santa Barbara, California. The band was founded by Parry Gripp (vocals, guitar), Charlie Dennis (bass), and Steve Sherlock (drums). The music of the group is defined as pop-punk, geek rock, alternative rock. The current lineup of Nerf Herder includes Parry Gripp, Steve Sherlock, Ben Pringle, and Linus of Hollywood. The band is famous for its simplistic modern punk-style songs with frequently humorous and pop-culture-referencing lyrics. Nerf Herder is the pioneer of the "nerdcore" music subgenre.
The name of the band is taken from the Star Wars franchise. A "nerf herder" is equivalent to a sheepherder. Nerf Herder was the debut self-titled album by the band that came out in 1996. Dennis left the band after the release of this album and was replaced by Pete Newbury. Their first album was followed by some other releases, including How to Meet Girls (2000) American Cheese (2002). Both were released under Honest Don's Records. Nerf Herder IV was released in 2008 under Oglio Records, whereas the last album by Nerf Herder came out in 2016 as Rockingham under Golfshirt Records.
Nerf Herder also released two extended plays, including My EP (2001) and High Voltage Christmas Rock (2002). The band wrote as well as performed the theme song for the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer in 1997. The group also appeared as the musical guest in the final-season Buffy episode entitled "Empty Places." Their single "Van Halen" was a tribute to the band of the same name that was well-known.
