Nazareth Information
Nazareth is a Scottish hard rock band. The group's current lineup consists of Carl Sentance, Lee Agnew, Jimmy Murrison, and Pete Agnew. Nazareth was created in December 1968 in Dunfermline, Scotland, by vocalist Dan McCafferty, guitarist Manny Charlton, bassist Pete Agnew, and drummer Darrell Sweet, all of whom had previously been members of the semi-professional local group The Shadettes (formed in 1961). The influence of the Fab Four and the Stones was significant.
The first line of The Band's timeless song "The Weight," Nazareth, Pennsylvania, is mentioned. After relocating to London in 1970, the band released their self-titled debut album the following year. Following the success of their second album, 1972's Exercises, Nazareth toured in support of Deep Purple and released Roger Glover's produced third studio album, 1973's Razamanaz. Both Broken Down Angel and Bad Bad Boy from this album reached the top ten in the United Kingdom.
The album Loud 'N' Proud came out later that year, with a cover of Joni Mitchell's "This Flight Tonight," which became a top hit in its own right. The following year, in 1974, another album titled Rampant was released, and it too was a huge success, even though the album's sole hit, "Shanghai'd in Shanghai," just missed the British Top 40. Non-album track "My White Bicycle," a rendition of Tomorrow's original, made the UK Top 20 that same year.
