On the second Sunday in May, Americans celebrate Mother's Day to honor the significant role of mothers in our families and society. This special day, first observed at a worship service at St. Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia, on May 10, 1908, was founded by Anna Jarvis. Her initiative and dedication led to the establishment of this beloved holiday.
Many people look forward to family dinners, attending church (often with flowers in hand), and exchanging Christmas cards and gifts. Except for 2011 and 2014, when May 1 was a Sunday, the men's golf tournament, The Players Championship, took place on Mother's Day weekend from 2007 to 2018. In such instances, it took place the next weekend. Beginning in 2004 and continuing until 2009, Mother's Day weekend was the site of the Kingsmill Championship women's golf event.
