Mike Stern Information
Mike Stern is an American jazz guitarist. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts. After his time with Blood, Sweat, & Tears, he collaborated with Billy Cobham on drums, then spent 1981–1983 and 1985–1986 with Miles Davis on trumpet. After that, he left alone and has since released over a dozen solo albums. Guitar Player magazine proclaimed Stern the year's best jazz guitarist.
The Miles Davis Award, granted annually since 2007 at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal to a jazz musician of international renown whose work has greatly contributed to the rejuvenation of the genre, was bestowed upon him that June. Down Beat magazine included Stern in their 2009 list of 75 jazz guitarists. On January 21, 2012, Guitar Player gave him the Certified Legend Award. Upside Downside was released in 1986 on Atlantic Records as Stern's debut as a solo artist, featuring the talents of Jaco Pastorius, David Sanborn, and Bob Berg. He played in Michael Brecker's quintet from 1986 to 1988 and can be heard on the album "Don't Try This at Home."
Time in Place, his second album for Atlantic, was released the same year. It included the talents of drummer Peter Erskine, keyboardist Jim Beard, bassist Jeff Andrews, percussionist Don Alias, and organist Don Grolnick. To pay tribute to Miles Davis, Stern recorded a song called "Chief," which appeared on his next album, Jigsaw, produced by guitarist Steve Khan. After meeting Bob Berg, Dennis Chambers, and Lincoln Goines in 1989, Stern put together a touring band with them. They stayed together until 1992 when they released the album Odds or Evens.
