Mickey Hart Information
Mickey Hart (September 11, 1943) is an American percussionist. He was born in Brooklyn, New York. In New York, he went to Cedarhurst's Lawrence High School. Many renowned rudimental drummers attended Hart's high school, and he credits his mentor, Arthur Jones, with helping him rise to the first chair in the All-State Band and avoiding suspension for class negligence.
In Atlantic Beach, New York, he worked as a soda jerk at El Patio, where he was exposed to Tito Puente's music. An additional formative influence was the music of Nigerian drummer Babatunde Olatunji, which he encountered just a few months after graduating from high school. In the future, Olatunji would instruct and work with Hart. In September of 1967, Hart became a member of the Grateful Dead.
"Rhythms of the Universe," a piece by Hart, was first performed in 2010. A wide range of astronomical data inspired it. Scientists and artists worked together to create this piece, each employing high-tech methods. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and University of California, Berkeley physicist and Nobel laureate in physics George Smoot and LBNL computer scientist and musician Keith Jackson are contributing data to the project.
