Stephin Merritt is the man behind the American band The Magnetic Fields. Merritt frequently plays many instruments and is the group's lead singer, producer, and composer. Love themes abound in Merritt's music, which features unconventional or neutral gender roles and is witty, biting, sarcastic, and occasionally hilarious.
1991, the group's first single, "100,000 Fireflies," was released. The song was classic for the band's earlier work; it included Merritt's synthesized instruments and lead vocals from Susan Anway (later, from the House of Tomorrow EP forward, Stephin Merritt himself).
Merritt, Claudia Gonson, Sam Davol, and John Woo make up the current, more conventional band; Shirley Simms occasionally provides guest vocals. The band's most famous work is a three-disc concept album released in 1999, 69 Love Songs. There was a "no-synth" trilogy that came out in the years after it, including i (2004), Distortion (2008), and Realism (2010). Quickies, the band's most recent album, came out on May 29, 2020.
